Let me say first, I very much appreciate the digital format for what it does for us consumers. Every format has pros and cons. Lets look at some of the reasons to support physical music:
1. It supports the artist (sometimes more). The artist generally makes more money per copy sold than on digital. Cds can sell around $11-$18 while digital is generally $5-10 for a full length album. Cd’s generally cost around $3 in runs of over 300 copies. vinyl and cassette can have an even better margin sometimes.
2. It supports the label. Labels are often ran by hardcore music lovers who are deep into the specific niche genre and want to share more good music with their fans. Often, these are some of the most dedicated people in the business. Often doing it for no money while helping spread the smaller artist you love. Trust me! I know lol
3. It helps support physical record stores. Without physical music, there are no great record stores. No stores to find out where the great local music venues are. No place for local bands to put their physical music on sale. Often these places have live shows there and are a hub for geeks like us 🙂
4. It helps support those who have music related jobs – mastering, graphic designers, distributers, manufacturing houses, record stores etc etc.
5. Value. Often, physical music can retain the value you spent on it. Sometimes depreciating , sometimes increasing in value (especially with rare music). Digital music rarely has any value. Dont make us laugh with NFT.
6. Fidelity audibly can often times be better than picking up encoded music by others. I have had plenty of discussions on what format is better. They all have great purposes and uses. Depending on the style of music and many anomalies (intentional or otherwise) you may come across the ideal sounding version of the music you like.
7. Have you ever got your favorite artist to sign your digital copy of your favorite album? Neither have I?!
There are many other ideas I can think of why you want to support physical media. I will let you add some to keep the topic interactive 🙂
